Screening Time 时间: May 3, 2025 | 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM Location: Room 255, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, San Jose State University

📢 Dissidents: Is It Truly Possible to Escape the Shadow of Authoritarianism?
Amid the desolate expanse of California's Mojave Desert stands a sculpture park, where artist Weiming Chen crafted a provocative piece: a towering sculpture depicting Xi Jinping's head fused with a giant coronavirus particle, symbolizing criticism of the Chinese government. In 2021, this sculpture was set ablaze, allegedly as part of a suppression effort by Chinese authorities. Subsequently, the U.S. Department of Justice charged seven individuals accused of conducting espionage activities on behalf of the Chinese government. Among them was a former prison guard who posed as an art patron, installed surveillance equipment on the sculpture, and was implicated in the arson plot.
Directed by Yi Chen, the documentary Dissidents delves deep into the Chinese government's transnational repression of dissenters abroad. The film chronicles the real-life experiences of three Chinese dissidents exiled in the United States, highlighting the threats and challenges they face in their pursuit of democracy. One such figure is Wang Juntao, a principal organizer of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, who now leads the China Democracy Party from New York, frequently encountering harassment and attacks from pro-Beijing groups.

The documentary further exposes tactics employed by the Chinese government to silence opposition voices overseas, including harassment of dissidents' families back home, disruption of protest activities, and espionage operations in foreign countries. These alarming incidents underscore that, even in exile, dissidents remain within the reach of the regime's control.
Dissidents was awarded Best Feature Documentary at the 2025 DC Independent Film Festival and has been recognized at several international film festivals, including the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and the Asian American International Film Festival in New York.
Is it truly possible to escape the shadow of authoritarianism? This documentary invites you to reflect on this question and encourages you to join the conversation during this screening event.
