October Event Update: The dream of elections on South China Streets and in Villages—A Review of the Umbrella Movement and the Wukan Village
As the upcoming U.S. elections approach, we will review at two significant explorations of people's desire for democratic elections that took place on the streets and in villages in South China. Through two documentaries, we will review moments from more than a decade ago: during the Umbrella Movement, the Hong Kong people demanded genuine universal suffrage to ensure their right to choose their own leaders—the future of Hong Kong belongs to the people; and during the Wukan Protests, villagers in Wukan, Lufeng City, Guangdong Province, fought for their land rights and local elections, standing up against corrupt local officials. Let us reflect the strong desire of ordinary people to use elections as a means of expressing their will and achieving political participation in China not long ago .
Yellowing @Berkeley
Wukan documentary @Berkeley
Yellowing is a film by Chan Tze-woon that documents the 2014 Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong, as people took to the streets to demand genuine universal suffrage, among other calls for realizing Hong Kong people’s human rights. Yellowing went on to be nominated for the Taipei Golden Horse for best documentary of 2016, won the Ogawa Shinsuke Prize at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2017, and was shortlisted in the Documentary Feature category for the 91st Academy Awards (2019).
10 years after the Umbrella Revolution, the Hong Kong Affairs Association of Berkeley (HKAAB) would like to bring this documentary to be screened in the San Francisco Bay Area and we cordially invite everybody to learn more about this historic moment for Hong Kongers and democracy movements in the 21st century. We are also honored to have a special guest join us to share their thoughts and personal experiences after the screening.
