2077 Gold St, Alviso, CA

Hong Kong’s High Court has recently sentenced Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison. The ruling stems from convictions handed down in December 2025, related to charges under the Hong Kong National Security Law. Lai has been detained since late 2020. Apple Daily, the outspoken newspaper he founded, was also forced to shut down after repeated police raids and the freezing of its assets—an act widely seen by the international community as a severe blow to press freedom.
At this moment, We invite you to a special screening event: the documentary The Hongkonger. Through this film, we hope to learn more about Jimmy Lai’s story and reflect together: when press freedom is systematically suppressed, and the cost of telling the truth keeps rising, how can we respond—and how do we protect what matters?
The Hongkonger tells the life story and struggle of media entrepreneur and democracy advocate Jimmy Lai. From building Apple Daily from the ground up to becoming one of Hong Kong’s most outspoken critics of Beijing—and ultimately a symbol of resistance—the film traces his journey through interviews, archival footage, and coverage of his repeated arrests. It portrays his unwavering commitment to press freedom, democracy, and human rights despite imprisonment and political pressure.
